1. in electrical circuits, a series of four separately insulated conductors, generally twisted together in pairs. 2. In electronic circuits, a combination of transistors wired in series and parallel to increase the circuit’s reliability in that the failure of one transistor does not disable the entire circuit. 3. In thermodynamics, a unit of heat energy, equal to 1015 British thermal units (Btus), or about 1.055 × 1018 joules.

a system of demarcating the plan view of a hole plan. In the quadrant system, the horizontal direction of the target from the well site is expressed in terms of number of degrees east or west of due north or due south.

an instrument that measures the quantity of a given variable in an electric circuit.

a South American tree that is a source of tannin extract, which was extensively used as a thinning agent for drilling mud, but is seldom used today.

to cool heat-treated metal rapidly by immersion in an oil or water bath.

a tower in which off-gases from the reactor are cooled.

oil injected into the liquid product from a cracking furnace with a view to cooling it rapidly and thus terminating the cracking reaction.

a well-site computer log.

a specially designed valve, usually hydraulically operated from a location remote from the valve, which, when actuated immediately opens the valve.

a lightweight slurry designed to control lost circulation by setting very quickly.

calcium oxide, CaO, used in certain oil-base muds to neutralize the organic acid.

the state of being quiet or at rest (being still). Static.

a deed that relinquishes to someone else any rights or interests that a person may have in property. The grantor of the quitclaim deed warrants nothing, merely conveys whatever rights, if any, he or she may have.

in mathematical division, the quantity that results when one quantity is divided by another. For example, where 6 ÷ 2 = 3, 3 is the quotient.
