There are many types of deposition. In this case, we will show examples of deposition by rivers and streams. The process begins as, over time, moving water erodes the riverbed rocks and materials into smaller, lighter particles. These sediments can be transported as pebbles, sand and mud. As the water flow slows, the sediment suspended in the water falls to the river or stream bed. Deposition is the geological term used to describe this depositing and subsequent accumulation of sediment into rock formations.
